Part 1 of this article, “Viktor Frankl on Meaning through Work,” explored Frankl’s first path to meaning by offering some supporting elements of the path of spiritual rebirth or “regeneration” described by Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) two centuries earlier.
In Part 2, we’ll look at finding meaning by experiencing something or encountering someone. This, too, is harmonious with key parts of Swedenborg’s perspective on our path of spiritual rebirth. It’s all about love and understanding.

Frankl speaks of “experiencing something or encountering someone.” Another way of saying this is having a relationship with something or someone.

Stop Anxiety and Stress
It is easy to get anxious, and let anxiety take over. We are more used to this than the alternative. We weren’t taught how to deal with stress unless we were extremely fortunate to have wise teachers in our early lives. However, we don’t have to let it take over. We can channel it, and by being aware of these feelings, and suppressing them – we are far better off.
For myself, I find it easy to let anxiety kick in because I know what I want to do, and I know what I need to make it happen – but things don’t always work out the way that we hoped they would. I have had many changes recently (big ones) and many new challenges and responsibilities – but I am choosing to not let them stress me out, or bring me anxiety. I guess you’re supposed to share personal stories as a writer, so I will share some. I recently left my job of nearly 3 years, and I am now working towards building my own company. I am very good at what I do, and I know I can do very well at it (and work remotely – which has always been my dream) however, it’s a lot easier said than done; especially when you have to depend on other people (in my case, building out websites, and setting up technology that is required to function) I’m very proactive, and I’m very determined (I’ve always been this way) but when things don’t work out, I used to panic. All good things require work, and I am working hard to make things happen. I am constantly working to find new clients, bring on new campaigns, get contracts, find publishers, setting up contracts, setting up calls, documenting it all, organizing everything, responding as quickly as I can, constantly looking for new opportunities, working on potential partnerships, speaking to web developers and programmers, etc…and it’s not easy. But it’s what is required of me now, and it’s what I wanted, so I’m happy about it. I’m not afraid to work hard, just sometimes that work doesn’t translate into what our expectations were for our actions and efforts. We can’t obsess about the things we can’t control, all we can do is what we are capable of.
Attitude is a choice, and the more we choose to look at things in a positive light, the better we are. I can sit here and stress out (I don’t have a source of income at the moment, other than a consulting gig that only pays on commission, I have a lot of bills, I have many hobbies and things I love to do that require time and money, and I am approaching 30 and envisioned having a home and a family in the very near future) but I choose not to. Nothing good comes from stress or anxiety. Stress or Anxiety doesn’t pay bills, it doesn’t find work, it doesn’t create a job, it doesn’t do laundry, it doesn’t help you sleep, it doesn’t make you feel good, it doesn’t take you to the gym, it doesn’t put good food or thoughts into your body, and it doesn’t benefit or help you in any way.
The only things we can control are ourselves, and the things that we ourselves can do. That is what I’m focused on now, and I will find a way – as we all will.
Always remember all of the situations you have been in, where you thought they couldn’t get any worse. Where are you now? Do you still think about them or feel the stress or anxiety you felt at the time? All things pass, and in the end, they find a way to work themselves out.
Stay calm, continue to do the things you love, take care of yourself, be responsible for your own actions, focus on the plan, and things will work out. Stick with this mentality – and everything will be okay. You’re in control. Stay in control.
